According to PreCentral, the Palm Pre will soon see a new version of webOS. The 1.1 bump will bring several new features, chief among them much better policy and security controls for Exchange.
According to those who claim to be in-the-know, webOS 1.1 will be pushed out some time in the next 30 days. The changelog is a little bit on the short side, but the improvements to the Pre's Exchange support are real.
webOS 1.1 will include improved handling of digital certificates and much broader support forMicrosoft Exchange ActiveSync security policies. They include:
- IT initiated remote wipe
- Device requires PIN/password
- Improved PIN/password complexity (numeric or alphanumeric)
- Minimum PIN/password length
- Device wipe on X number of failed password attempts
- And auto-lock after X minutes of inactivity
These should all make the IT department happier about supplying Pres to mobile employees, as the added security measures make it easier for them to protect sensitive corporate data and assets.
Other suggested pieces of the update include some new on-board applications. No details were provided on exactly what those will be, but anything would be appreciated, I am sure.
All you Pre owners out there, keep your eyes peeled for the update. Hopefully you'll see it before August 1.
